Weekend Update 1/29/12

1. Australian Open: What a great tournament this year! Women’s semifinals featured players seeded 2, 3, 4, and 11 (who beat No.1 seed in the quarters), and men’s semifinals featured players seeded 1, 2, 3, and 4. Although Sharapova didn’t win the championship game, and Federer lost to Nadal in the semis, I’m glad Djokovic beat Nadal in the final. I hate when people take away credit from Federer saying he can’t beat Nadal. Federer has been stronger against Djokovic, who has been stronger against Nadal, who has been stronger against Federer, so the whole “Federer can’t beat Nadal” is somewhat softened in a three-way tie.

2. The real winner of the Autralian Open? Kia, who managed to get the winners and runner-ups to thank Kia as a sponsor in their trophy ceremony speeches. Great marketing. (Also, kudos to Nadal for thanking  ball boys and umpires. Very classy.)

3. I gave the first quiz to my students on Friday. They did very well. As far as I can tell, they didn’t cheat, and there doesn’t seem to be any area of the material we covered a lot of them are systematically missing. By the way, being on the giving end of quizzes and tests is quite awesome.

4. My cute niece update: Grace is so cute!!!

5. I am still losing weight and waist line. I’ve been using my crock pot to make food, and it’s been very pleasant.
